Finally!!! Completed My Final Year Project!

Was really really busy these few weeks!  The Siesta Festival was taxing; literary criticism was taxing; Korean Language test; and most taxing was this FYP!  Anyway, I had finished the work on time and next week is the exhibition.  So here it is, another one of my works. Now can sleep in peace.

Blessings - 福

Really busy with the FYP(final year project).  I'll be doing relief prints based on the chinese symbols and characters.  Four panels 2' by 4' in size and another one of size A2. These are the two completed. the first one is nian nian you yu.  I print on own made paper.

This is 禄, prosperity, fortune.  This one is the inked block.  The deers shown are in etymology forms.  Deer is homophonic with the chinese character "lu"(禄), meaning fortune, prosperity.

reviewing the passing moments

it's been long while. The seoncd year is more taxing. I took Print II, Painting II, Introduction of language(english), English, Western Art History and SHE for first term and Print III, Drawing, Modern Malaysian Art, BM, Phonetic and Study of Language(English) for the second term. The coming third year, I have to get ready to present the proposal for the FYP when semester starts in September 2011. I have decided on the theme and the title, it has to do with the chinese character texts and the chinese auspicious symbols. I will be doing woodcut printing.

this is my final sem2 project. It is called "Ruyi Jixiang". The character texts read: ruyijixiang which is homophonic with the graphic at the lower right hand corner, an auspicious symbol meaning "as you wish". If things can be as you wish, everyone should be happy and blissful. Red is used as background to convey the joy in conjuction with the happy occassion ( could be new year, could be joyful celebration).

For drawing, it was more of collage. See photos below.

I'll continue the theme on print III, using chinese auspicious symbols and texts. will be doing sketches during the term holidays.

Actually just came back from touring Paris and Rome. The Louvre and Orsay Museums are most rewarding. Gallery Academy and Borghese gallery not so exciting. Of course I get to see the original David by Michaelangelo. It's spectacular to say the least. But Sistine Chapel by Michaelangelo is the grand finale of the whole tour. It is awesome. I also saw master artworks of gustav courbet, van gogh, manet, monet, renoir, JL David, Auguste Ingres, Fragonard, Watteau, Poussin, and lots and lots of great artists. It is truely the tour of the aesthetic world. Other than the artworks that draw my focus, I do not find Paris and Rome interesting at all. Not as clean, not as efficient, not as friendly, not as convenient as Singapore. Malaysia is more friendly, more convenient and food is heavenly!!

Rintis

Tonight went to see the opening ceremony for RINTIS - the final year art school students' exhibition. The product and designing students were very impressive. I marvel their creativities and innovations. Some of the products are really really beautiful apart from commercially practical as well. They will become good product designers. Many of them did the "exhibits" in the art school workshop, toiling and sanding, spray painting and attaching the various components one by one. I saw their hardworks and efforts, they truly deserved merits for their projects. The fine arts exhibits were quite disappointing though. I may be too conservative in my approach to arts. I still can't bring myself to like and accept paintings of Andy Warhol and Sean Scully or Malevich as art, I mean "art as art". They should be in the sociology or philosophy section.
